Silicone Vascular Model for Carotid Bypass Surgery
Aug 02, 2018
Carotid arteries are the major blood vessels that deliver blood to your brain. Older age and stiffer arteries will induceatherosclerosis, a disease in which plaque builds up in thearteries and make your carotid arteries narrower. Plaque may become calcified, bleeding even break apart from the wall, causing carotid artery occlusion and cerebral infarction.
Carotid bypass surgery is performed to redirect blood flow from one area to another by reconnecting blood vessels. If the carotid artery is totally blockage, the surgeon may patch it with synthetic graft material or harvest a vein from patient’s own leg vein. Therefore, blood will flow over the vessel and reach the distal tissue of blockage, which can improve the blood supply and avoid the risk of stroke.
Trandomed can create a 3D printed carotid bypass model from based on real operative data. It is made of special silicone formulas, reproducing the realism of bypass surgery. It can be applied to surgical demonstration and education, showing how to find the best proximal and distal anastomosis, how to determine the inflow tract and reducerisks for late stroke and rates of recurrent stenosis and occlusion.
